Why I pursued my certification as Crisis Manager

A lot of people wondered why I pursued the certification as crisis manager. For as long as I’ve been a working professional, my job has been to help teams and companies overcome roadblocks and struggles that prevent them from achieving their goals. Whether it’s a team that needs a project manager to lead them through a digital transformation project or a company that needs a strategic direction to overcome roadblocks – I am the person they bring on board. I have led several companies through a crisis during my career. I really wanted to be able to claim the title of crisis manager though,.. even with a track record which shows I have the experience.

Covid 19

When the pandemic struck, I was at the cusp of working on a new and very exciting project. Like the millions of people out there, I lost the gig. I had two choices – to start stressing about the future or to accept things as they were. So I managed this just like I managed all the other challenges of life.
I decided to formally pursue an education I had been contemplating for long but never really had the time to chase. As grim as the pandemic was, i made time to take on this course at BCM Academy. And I’m so glad I did!

In most of my experiences, I was approached by companies triggered by some form of crisis. Often I help those companies with the transition. But often it’s a crisis which made the problem obvious. I help companies manage this part too. Meaning that my input goes further then just the digital part of the story. I’m also involved in the strategic decisions that companies need to make to be future proof. It involves changhe throughout the company. Sometimes it involves letting people go who do not match the vision and strategy of the renewed company. It also involves decisions that need to be made based on budget cuts.

But at the end of the road, I help companies rise from their ashes.

That’s where the CCM course really helped me formulate a better framework & validated the strategies I used to pull companies out of crises.

Why did I pursue my Certification as Crisis Manager

I had been operating using sheer common sense and an experience derived from the ability to think out of the box. The CCM framework allowed me to experience the crisis management process through a practical approach. It’s only through experiencing crisis that you can be an effective crisis manager. I have always functioned on common sense and the basics I received regarding management. With this course I wanted to refine my knowledge so that I could become a better crisis manager. Although this hasn’t been my core business, it does feel like it’s the way I need to move in my career.

I have made a noteworthy impact in several organizations. I want to be able to continue doing this in the future. It was not only the framework, but also the different perspectives discussed in the course that helped me see through the multiple facets of managing a crisis:

  • stakeholder management
  • psychological factors (human reactions to a crisis)
  • cooperation with third parties, etc.

The Certified Crisis Management Course by Bert Keizer

What I loved most about the course was its academic model. We were not overloaded with long-winded theoretical texts to memorize. We didn’t have an instructor simply narrating off a script. The course was given by Bert Keizer, a well known professional in the world of Business Continuity Management and Crisis Management. Bert his track record is something  to blow you away. He used case studies from his long and successful career in crisis management. Bert Keizer used input from different experts and continuous interaction to help us truly understand and experience crisis situations.

At the end of the course, I have more refined knowledge.  This knowlegde will eventually lead me to be a better crisis manager. I have made a noteworthy impact in several organizations already, and I want to be able to continue doing this in the future.

So if you’re looking for a Certified Crisis Manager (CCM) who will help you walk out of an organizational crisis with confidence, I’m the person you can trust your challenges with!
